POSITION: ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

LOCATION: POHICK BAY REGIONAL GOLF COURSE – Lorton, VA

ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT is responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of a maintenance program for a golf course. Supervision is given to golf course maintenance workers. Work is performed under the general direction of the Golf Course Superintendent with moderate latitude for independent judgment and action within guidelines provided by the Golf Course Superintendent. Annual performance goals will be set for the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.

ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT is responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of a maintenance program for a golf course. Supervision is given to golf course maintenance workers. Work is performed under the general direction of the Golf Course Superintendent with moderate latitude for independent judgment and action within guidelines provided by the Golf Course Superintendent. Annual performance goals will be set for the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (with illustrative examples of work)

Assist with management of personnel:

ƒ¬plan, direct and control work of maintenance employees in the maintenance of golf course grounds and golf course maintenance equipment, including quality control.
ƒ¬determine workload, assign priorities, schedule employees and allocate resources.
ƒ¬develop and implement training programs for employees.
ƒ¬analyze and resolve employee work problems through application and interpretation of Personnel Policies.
ƒ¬develop performance standards and indicators and evaluate employee performance against those standards.
ƒ¬ensure adherence to fair and equitable employment practices.
ƒ¬interview and recommend applicants for regular, full-time employment; interview and select applicants for part-time/seasonal employment.
ƒ¬maintain employee time and attendance reports and performance records.
ƒ¬promote high levels of work performance and employee morale.
ƒ¬ensure the staff maintains required yearly safety training to include, but not limited to agency, local, state and federal regulatory pesticide and fertilizer compliance.
ƒ¬communicate necessary golf course maintenance and staffing information to the Golf Course Superintendent on a regular basis.

Assist with management of maintenance of grounds:

ƒ¬establish and maintain schedules for, and oversee routine grounds maintenance such as mowing and watering of greens, fairways and tees.
ƒ¬establish and maintain schedules for, and oversee special maintenance operations such as seeding, top- dressing, fertilization and aeration of grounds.
ƒ¬monitor and record irrigation and supply well usage.
ƒ¬identify and effectively treat turf damage and disease.
ƒ¬select and purchase needed materials; coordinate quantity purchases for multiple sites.
ƒ¬maintain comprehensive records of maintenance operations and related data. 
ƒ¬oversee the safe and proper application of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and other materials as needed and/or scheduled.
ƒ¬inspect completed work for conformance to specifications and for hazards.
ƒ¬analyze work efficiency and initiate improvements.
ƒ¬apply and interpret safety standards and ensures compliance.
ƒ¬keep abreast of golf course maintenance standards and changes.
ƒ¬advise park management personnel on turf management problems.
ƒ¬operate equipment and perform work of maintenance employees.

Assist with management of maintenance of equipment:
ƒ¬oversee maintenance and repair of irrigation system.
ƒ¬monitor wet-well and inspect pumping station equipment.
ƒ¬establish and maintain schedules for, and oversee routine maintenance of equipment such as sharpening of cutting blades, cleaning of equipment and checking engine oil.
ƒ¬establish and maintain schedules for, and oversee annual overhauling of equipment which includes cleaning and replacing of worn parts.
ƒ¬select and purchase needed materials; coordinate quantity purchases for multiple sites.

Assist with development and management of budget:
ƒ¬prepare and recommend annual budgets for golf course maintenance operations and capital improvements.
ƒ¬interpret and apply Park Authority policies and procedures to meet personnel, budget, property management and general services needs of the golf course.
ƒ¬monitor maintenance budget to ensure sound fiscal management.
ƒ¬authorize procurement of required materials, equipment, parts and/or services.

Perform administrative duties:
ƒ¬develop short- and long-term goals and recommend maintenance objectives, strategies and implementation plans.
ƒ¬investigate accidents, theft and vandalism and file appropriate reports in a timely manner.
ƒ¬prepare and maintain various business, personnel and administrative reports and records.
ƒ¬prepare and maintain employee training records and certifications.
ƒ¬maintain course daily log book.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from two year college with Associates Degree in turf management, agronomy, or closely related field.
Physical: Manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in outdoor and maintenance shop settings; will perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions; lift and move items equal to or greater than 80 pounds; climb ladders; use hand tools and operate mechanical equipment.

Experience: Five years of experience in golf course maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:
ƒ¬Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in golf course maintenance.
ƒ¬Knowledge and experience in personnel management.
ƒ¬Considerable knowledge of materials and equipment used in golf course maintenance.
ƒ¬Ability to identify, isolate, and initiate repairs to equipment.
ƒ¬Ability to identify and effectively treat turf damage and disease.
ƒ¬Ability to read and understand blueprints and other technical documents.
ƒ¬A participating knowledge of the game of golf and a reasonable understanding of the rules of the game.
ƒ¬Knowledge of potential hazards and safety precautions involved.
ƒ¬Knowledge of and ability to perform duties of all maintenance employees with skill in the operation of all related equipment.
ƒ¬Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
ƒ¬Ability to interpret and explain Park Authority policies, rules, and procedures to employees.
ƒ¬Ability to deal effectively with the general public, private vendors, and other employees.
ƒ¬Working knowledge of personal computers and various software applications.
ƒ¬Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Virginia drivers license with safe driving record.
ƒ¬Availability for call in emergency situations.
ƒ¬Availability to work additional hours during peak operating season including shift work and weekends.
ƒ¬Possession of or ability to obtain special licenses as required.
