DCR to Offer Two Nutrient Management Schools and NM Certification Exam

Susan Jones, Nutrient Management Certification Technician and Regional Secretary for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, recently announced two upcoming nutrient management training schools.  The Soil Science, Soil Fertility, Turf Production School is a lecture series conducted by Virginia Tech professors and DCR Staff Members.  The Nutrient Management Plan Writing School for Turf & Landscape is an hands-on workshop that covers writing nutrient management plans using Virginia's criteria.

Both schools are fast paced, two-day sessions and the cost of each class is $125.  Attendees can attend one or both sessions, and the schools will be held at NOVA Community College Manassas Campus.  Registration is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis so early sign-up is encouraged.  The deadline to register for classes is May 15.  The Soil Science, Soil Fertility, Turf Production School will be held May 29-30 and The Nutrient Management Plan Writing School for Turf & Landscape will take place June 5-6.

Ms. Jones also announced that on August 2 the DCR will conduct a Nutrient Management Certification Exam for both the Agriculture and Turf & Landscape categories.  The exams will be held from 8:20 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 2, at the Frontier Culture Museum located at 1290 Richmond Road in Staunton, VA.  A free exam review session will be offered the day before the exam, also in Staunton.

Exam application packets can be requested from Ms. Jones by no later than July 2, and the cost of the exam is $100.  Non-municipal golf courses are required to put in place a written Nutrient Management Program by 2017 so these classes represent an excellent opportunity to gain certification and save substantial dollars by preparing your mandated plans in-house.

For more information about the nutrient management schools, the exam, and to request an examination application packet, please contact Ms. Jones at 804.443.6752;  Additional information about the schools including a brochure, Nutrient Management Certification Knowledge Areas, and the Exam announcement is available on the Virginia Golf Course Superintendent website (click here for additional information)
