May is First Green Month

Thank you for hosting First Green field trips. May is First Green Month and a great chance to share what you’re doing at your course. Below are some ideas for spreading the news.

  1. Submit an article for your club newsletter. (See below.)
  2. Print and laminate the First Green posters found at http://bit.ly/247geLc. Post them at your club.
  3. Tweet a photo from your field trip to @TheFirstGreen and use hash tag #firstgreen.
  4. Post a photo from your field trip to your Facebook page.

Club Newsletter Article
Below is a sample article that you can modify for your club newsletter. You can insert more specific details about the school(s) you have hosted, and the activities you held. If you wish to use a photo that has identifiable students in it, make sure that you have signed photo release forms on file. We’d love to see your newsletter article once it appears, so please send us a copy at mailto:info@thefirstgreen.org?subject=Newsletter.

When is a Golf Green a Science Lab?
If you have ever seen students purposefully walking through our golf course, clipboards and calculators in hand, then you’ve caught a glimpse of a First Green field trip. Our club participates in a unique outreach to our local schools called First Green. This helps us be better known in the community and help grow the game of golf.

First Green uses golf courses as environmental learning labs – the only program of its kind. Our golf course superintendent, <insert your name>, has hosted students on field trips where they test water quality, collect soil samples, identify plants, design plantings, and use math skills to calculate the square footage of parts of the golf course that the superintendent deals with every day. The students are also introduced to many other aspects of golf, such as putting.

May is First Green month, and golf course superintendents across the U.S. and Canada are hosting local schools for First Green field trips. For more information about First Green, ask <insert your name>, or see www.thefirstgreen.org.

Or, if you are still in the planning stages of a First Green field trip, share that with your members. Below is a sample article.
