Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD seeks 1st Assistant Superintendent

Position Title: 1st Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Department: Golf Course Operations

Reports To: Golf Course Superintendent

Summary

Columbia Country Club was founded in 1898, it is a private member owned club which is situated in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The Club’s 1,600 family members enjoy golf, indoor and outdoor tennis, fitness and aquatic facilities, ice rink and paddle tennis courts. Annual gross revenues of $11 million with food and beverage sales of $4.6 million.

The 1st Assistant Superintendent reports to and is under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent. The individual in this position will be held responsible for routine golf course maintenance, pesticide action plans and general grounds observation throughout our 18 hole, 6,545 yard course designed by Walter Travis. CCC is a par 70 with a slope of 140.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Determine routine golf course maintenance operations such as watering, fertilizing, mowing, rolling, and bunker maintenance.

2. Monitor, identify and determine treatment for pest and diseases and apply herbicides, insecticides and fungicides when necessary.

3. Oversee some turf maintenance on immediate clubhouse grounds including irrigating, mowing, string trimming, edging.

4. Monitor and repair irrigation system around the golf course.

5. Assists in coordinating construction projects with club management and outside contractors.

6. Works on special projects as assigned.

7. Oversee golf course green department staff members’ daily tasks.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The 1st Assistant Superintendent will directly oversee the daily activities of 15+ general laborers. In addition, he/she will be held responsible for the direction, strategies and coordination of this specific area of course operations.

Position Qualifications and Functional Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory. Furthermore, he/she should possess the following personal and professional characteristics:

 Bachelor's or associate’s degree from an accredited college or university.

 Minimum of 3 years related experience in golf course management.

 A history of continued professional development.

 Pronounced “people skills” in dealings with staff and members.

 Able to understand and take direction from his/her superiors and execute the task to the best of his/her ability.

 Strong aptitude in multitasking.

 Able to meet the physical demands and responsibilities of the position. He/she will, while regularly performing the essential functions of the job, be standing, sitting and lifting/moving items or objects over 50 pounds and sometimes lift/move items up to 75 pounds.

 Preference for candidates proficient in equipment operation including tractors, skid steers, mowers, line trimmers, edging equipment and chainsaws.

 Ability to work in all weather conditions.

 Possess valid Maryland Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.

 Strong communication and organizational skills and ability to actively engage as a leader and an innovativer.

 Proactively solves problems, develops and proposes solutions to problems that occur, anticipates the needs of staff and members, and can react quickly.

 Able to read, analyze and interpret all business pertaining to the position.

 Attend departmental and necessary staff meetings.

Salary and Benefits

$70-80,000/year DOE. Full time benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid annual vacation, sick leave, 401K, and Christmas fund.
