VGCSA Mourns the Loss of Sally Canavan, wife of Dave Canavan

Sally Jane Canavan, 86, of Culpeper, died on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at her home. She was born on August 21, 1936, in Gardner, Massachusetts, to the late Howard and Vera Bancroft.

Sally earned her bachelor's degree in math at the University of Massachusetts in 1958, and then worked as a Computer for AVCO Corp research and development division in Wilmington, Mass. She was married to her college sweetheart, David Canavan, in 1959. Sally was an avid duplicate Bridge player, an expert needle worker, and a lifelong knitter. Sally was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she volunteered for the Food Closet for many years. She was also a member of the Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary. Her greatest joy in life was her family.

She is survived by her children, Kim Marie Canavan, Michael David Canavan (Cynthia), Karen Canavan Pagano (Gerald), William Joseph Canavan (Julie), and Robert Francis Canavan (Amy); six grandchildren, Kendall Wolfe Canavan, Preston Harrington Canavan, Christine Marie Canavan, Stephanie Rose Canavan (Tanner), Andrew Thomas Canavan, and Megan Sarah Canavan; and two great-grandchildren, Zelie Louise Marie Church and Felix Clement Joseph Church.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, David; and her sister, Nancy Lee Bancroft.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 115 N East St., Culpeper, VA 22701. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sally's name to the Food Closet at St. Stephen's Episcopal, 115 N East St., Culpeper, VA 22701.
