Furlong, Jumbercotta & Caldwell Honored with VGCSA Awards

President's Award
Scott Furlong, CGCS
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club

Scott Furlong, a dedicated figure in the golf industry for over three decades, secures the
prestigious Presidential Award in recognition of his exceptional leadership and
contributions to the industry throughout his career.

Scott was born in Oklahoma, but he has been a Northern Virginia resident since 1979.
Scott's journey began as an educator before transitioning to the turf industry. While a
teacher, he was very active as a coach for various sports.

Rising through the ranks, he became the superintendent at Robert Trent Jones Golf
Club, grooming the course for major events like the Presidents Cups and Tiger Woods
Quicken Loans Invitational. Next up is the Solheim Cup this coming September.

Scott's commitment to work-life balance, mentoring, and active engagement in the golf
community reflects his positive influence. His passion for coaching was transferred to
his kids, where he has coached his four children and their teams in various sports since
2004. His family is very important to him, and he is thankful his wife is so supportive. He
is proud to say that his oldest son is now at Penn State in the turf program.

Scott gives a lot of credit to Glenn Smickley, his former boss at RTJ. The President’s
Award is the VGCSA’s highest honor. It is a humbling acknowledgment of his enduring
dedication to the industry.

Scott is currently serving GCSAA as an Ambassador for government relations and he
serves on the golf advisory committee for the GCSAA Championship and the Golf
Classic.

Environmental Stewardship Award
Greg Caldwell
Pete Dye River Course

Greg Caldwell, the superintendent at the Pete Dye River Course, is the recipient of the VGCSA
Environmental Stewardship Award, celebrating his journey from a young golf enthusiast to a
prominent figure in turf management.

Hailing from Narrows, VA, Greg's early golf experiences evolved into a dedicated career. He
enjoyed his work at Winged Foot, where he saw Phil Mickelson’s hopes of winning the US Open
dramatically evaporate. Galloway National in Atlantic City also shaped his experience, as did
Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, a favorite of Ben Hogan. He did two stints at Primland
Resort, the gorgeous Virginia mountain course so full of wildlife and scenic vistas. Little did he
know that his move to The Greenbrier Resort would put him front and center of an
environmental nightmare of huge proportions.

A 100-year flood hit the resort just 17 days after he started work. This heightened his
environmental awareness, leading to meticulous creek cleanup and habitat preservation. Greg's
commitment to ecological balance, wildlife conservation, and exceptional course maintenance
earned him this prestigious award, symbolizing a harmonious blend of his love for golf and
environmental stewardship.

Today he continues to emphasize environmental stewardship on a daily basis at the Pete Dye
River Course, the home of his endeared Hokies. He loves working on their practice areas as
they hone their games alongside the spectacular setting above the New River.

and Forest Creek, a great new club in Pinehurst. From there, he got construction
experience at Stonewall Golf Club, later becoming a regional manager for Palmer Golf.

Patrick Connelly recruited him to the Landscape Supply team, and he continues with the
company today.
